Each year, over 38 million children and teens participate in sports. Unfortunately, over 3.5 million of them will sustain an injury during that time. Many children receive serious damage to their teeth, damage that could have been less severe or even avoided. In today’s blog, your Livingston dentists, Dr. David Silverstrom and Dr. Gary Silverstrom, explain how simple precautions can help protect the smiles of our young athletes.
Wear a Mouth Guard
A mouth guard helps preserve your smile. Studies show participants in sports are twice as likely to injure a tooth if they don’t wear a mouth guard. Regular use of a mouth guard can assist in preventing major dental trauma, such as a broken or lost tooth. Typically, mouth guards can be purchased from any sporting goods store, but a custom-made mouth guard offers more comfortable protection. Talk to your Livingston dentists today about a custom mouth guard. Remember, if your mouth guard begins to irritate your gums, you may need to replace it. Gum irritation is common in mouth guards that become worn and no longer fit properly.
Lost a Tooth?
Occasionally, an athlete will lose a tooth during a game or practice. Once a tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root. Hold the tooth under warm running water to remove any debris. Do not try to remove any tissue that may remain on the tooth. Try to place the tooth back into the socket, if this can’t be done due to pain or young age; place the tooth in a glass of milk. Bring the tooth and your child immediately to Dr. David or Gary Silverstrom.

Whether a child cracks or chips a tooth, or loses one completely, we can restore their smile to full function and appearance.
