What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is an appliance used to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth. It is typically comprised of an artificial tooth, or pontic, attached to a dental crown on either side. These crowns are affixed to the natural teeth on either side of a gap, where they provide strong support for the pontic. If two or more consecutive teeth are missing, multiple pontics may be attached to the crowns.
If natural teeth are present on only one side of a gap, our dentists will use a cantilever bridge to fill the gap. With this type of bridge, the crowns that support the pontic are positioned at only one end. Cantilever bridges are often used to replace missing front teeth.
Dental bridges can also be attached to dental implants, which, if the teeth on either side of the gap are perfectly healthy, may be ideal. The placement of the crowns that bookend a traditional bridge requires the removal of natural tooth structure, while implant-supported bridges allow healthy adjacent teeth to remain intact.
At the Silverstrom Group, we use bio-compatible, tooth-colored materials in the fabrication of our bridges to ensure the most natural-looking results possible.
Benefits of Dental Bridges
Dental bridges provide outstanding long-term replacements for missing teeth. By filling the gap left by a missing tooth, you help to ensure that the adjacent teeth don’t shift out of their optimal position. The integrity of your bite will be restored, and you will be able to chew and speak with renewed ease. Because dental bridges are fixed in the mouth, they will not slip out of place or fall out. With proper maintenance, they can last for ten years or more, giving you a beautiful, healthy-looking smile that you will be proud to flash at every opportunity.
